Umphrey's McGee has always been a band built for the road. Growing out their South Bend Shoes quickly, the now call Chicago home, and after playing the Las Tortugas Festival in Yosemite, CA for Halloween, they will return to Chicago for a 3 Night New Years run! Always a progressive band they have been trying to work out a way that members of the audience can request songs during the show. They had a run at this on the afternoon of October 3rd at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee where 50 lucky fans got to participate in an experiment. As guitarist/singer Jake Cinninger put it, "We're all hamsters and gerbils in a cage." Basically how it worked were the fans came in and were given instructions, their instructions were to text song and jam ideas to the crew, the crew then would filter through them and post these requests up on a large screen for the band to see. The band upon seeing the requested song would jam or segue into the requested song. The experiment seemed to work well, and Umphrey's, being so progressive and improvisational made it look somewhat easy to mix jams-songs and smoothly transitions from one request to another. The shows was called S2 for Stews Arts Series. Fans seemed to really enjoy the experience and participation. At $100 I am sure it was worth it. More and more band seem to be doing this lately, trying to use technology to build a tighter bond with their fan base. Umphrey's will continue to play "regular" shows, and we have a large list of those international dates below. Umphrey's will continue to do S2 at various locations throughout the tour.
